Find happiness in the little things
Happiness. A concept, a philosophy, a lifestyle. It’s abstract and relative and has almost everyone begging at its feet.
“I want to be happy.”
“Let me be happy.”
“How can I be happy?”
“If only I were happy.”
Our world revolves around happiness to the point some may say that it borders on insanity. We yearn for happiness and to go immeasurable lengths to acquire it.
Some say money cannot buy happiness, others say the claim is pure deception. After all, we buy toys and clothes, use our money to go to theme parks, pay for spa days because we’ve had a horrid week and need it.
We derive happiness from material goods. The second we recieve a gift we are overcome with happiness.
“You didn’t have to” we say, elation printed across our foreheads. “There was really no need.”
We go out, play, eat and we say we’re happy.
But after that huge bang of happiness fades all it leaves is an empty feeling, desire. We want more, we want to be happy all the time. But the very thing that makes happiness so special is the misery we feel at other times, ironic isn’t it?
We think happiness exists in the big things. The expensive gifts, the trips abroad, the envious looks of others, so on and so forth.
However, I choose to believe that the purest form of happiness takes life in the little things.
A smile from a stranger after a bad day, a “good morning” text to wake up to, calls with a friend or family member who lives far away. All these things can give you the same joy but you won’t feel empty after.
The small things linger for a second, then disperse peacefully. They don’t haunt your memory and have you develop greed for more money, more money to buy designer gifts, more money to travel.
No, the little things leave you with the thought, “Hey, maybe the world isn’t such a bad place after all.”
So I try to find happiness in the little things.
Hope you’ve enjoyed reading and see you next week.
IKIGAI more important than being Happy.
